What Dakoo is, and what it is not
Dakoo is a private noticeboard for the verified residents of a specific residential community. It exists so neighbours can find each other, share things, buy things together and ask each other for help.
Dakoo is an intermediary. Every post, price, claim, photograph and promise on Dakoo is written by a member, not by us. We do not create listings, we do not verify goods, we do not inspect anything, we do not set or suggest prices, and we do not choose who deals with whom.
Dakoo is NOT a shop, a marketplace operator, a broker, an agent, an auction house, a payment service, an escrow, a lender, a delivery service, a classified advertising business, or a professional services firm. It does not sell anything and it takes no commission on anything.
Dakoo never holds, transfers, processes or touches money. Every rupee that moves as a result of something read on Dakoo moves directly between members, or between a member and a vendor they chose themselves. Anybody who asks you to pay Dakoo, to pay an administrator, or to share a one-time password is committing a fraud. Report them immediately.
Where Dakoo shows that a number of residents want the same thing, that is a count of what members said. It is not an offer, a quotation, a group purchase, or a contract. Members who choose to negotiate together do so as themselves, choose their own representative, and are solely responsible for what they agree.
Who may use it
Dakoo is open only to residents of a community that has been set up on it, who have verified a phone number and been confirmed by their neighbours. Access is by invitation, and invitations are personal.
You must be 18 or older to use Dakoo on your own account. Indian law treats anybody under 18 as a child for data protection purposes, and requires verifiable consent from a parent or lawful guardian before a child’s personal data is processed. If you are under 18 you may use Dakoo only through a household account with that consent recorded, and some features are closed to you.
You are answerable for whoever you invite. Inviting somebody who does not live in the community removes both of you. If you obtained access by claiming to live somewhere you do not, your access and the access of everybody you invited is removed permanently.
One person, one account. Do not share your account, do not create a second one, and do not use somebody else’s.
What you may not post
You must not post anything that is unlawful in India, or that Dakoo’s community rules prohibit. In particular you must not post, share, host or transmit anything that:
- (a)is obscene, pornographic, paedophilic, or harmful to a child in any way
- (b)invades another person’s privacy, including sharing anybody’s phone number, flat number, photograph, vehicle number, movements or family details without their consent
- (c)is insulting or harassing on the basis of gender, religion, caste, race, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation, or is defamatory, obscene, libellous, or promotes enmity between groups
- (d)is knowingly false, misleading, or impersonates another person, or misrepresents the origin of a message
- (e)threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, its friendly relations with foreign states, or public order, or incites any cognisable offence
- (f)infringes anybody’s patent, trademark, copyright or other proprietary right
- (g)contains a software virus or anything designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer resource
- (h)relates to the sale of anything whose sale requires a licence you do not hold, including medicines, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, weapons, ammunition, fireworks, and live animals sold for profit
- (i)is gambling, betting, a lottery, a chain scheme, a money circulation scheme, or any offer of financial or investment returns
- (j)is commercial advertising by a business rather than a resident, or is unsolicited bulk messaging of any kind
- (k)is a rental, resale or sharing of a service in breach of that service’s own terms, including sharing a paid subscription outside the household it is licensed to, or reselling a broadband connection.
You must not join a room you do not belong to, collect money on behalf of a group, forward what was said in a private room, add outsiders to any room, or file a false or vindictive report.
Posts are screened by a word filter and by an automated reviewer before they appear. Screening is a precaution, not a guarantee, and it does not make Dakoo the author of anything that gets through.
Deals between members are between members
Anything you arrange through Dakoo is a private arrangement between you and the other person, whether it is a sale, a swap, a rental, a shared cab, a bulk order, a service booking or the loan of a ladder. It is governed by ordinary Indian contract law and it does not involve Dakoo.
Dakoo gives no warranty about any member, any vendor, any item, any price, any quality, any title, any timeline or any outcome. We do not check that a seller owns what they are selling, that a service provider is qualified or insured, that a price is fair, or that anybody will turn up.
Check the person, the goods and the paperwork yourself before you pay anybody anything. Meet in a public part of your community. Do not send advance payment to somebody you have not met.
Figures members quote, including savings, discounts and market prices, are their own statements and are not verified by us.
If a deal goes wrong, it is between the people who made it. Dakoo will help by removing a post and, where the rules were broken, by removing a member. Dakoo will not adjudicate a dispute, refund anybody, or compensate anybody.
Your data
We store only what makes Dakoo work: your Telegram user id, your name as Telegram gives it, a phone number used once to verify you are a real person, your community and flat, who invited you, the rooms you joined, what you posted, what alerts you set, and roughly when you last opened the app. If you choose to give them, an age range and how you would like to be referred to.
We use it for one purpose: running a private noticeboard for your community. That is the purpose you consent to when you join.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else, other than where the law obliges us to. There is no advertising on Dakoo, no third-party analytics, no tracking pixels and no behavioural profiling.
Your data is held on hardware we control, in India.
Posts and photographs expire and delete themselves. Nothing is kept because it might be useful later.
You have the right to see what we hold about you, to have it corrected, and to have it erased. Send /deletemydata to the bot and everything about you is deleted immediately and permanently, including your posts. You can withdraw consent at any time, and withdrawing it means leaving Dakoo.
Where we are required to retain information for a fixed period after an account is removed, we retain only what the law requires and nothing else.
A child’s data is not used for tracking, behavioural monitoring, or targeted advertising of any kind. We do none of those things for anybody.
Complaints, and how to reach a human
If any post, member, room or data matter needs attention, tell the grievance officer:,The Dakoo grievance officer, grievance@dakoo.in, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Every complaint is acknowledged within 24 hours and resolved within 15 days.
A complaint about content that exposes a person, such as an intimate image or an impersonation, is acted on within 24 hours.
Unlawful content is removed as soon as we have actual knowledge of it, whether from a member’s report, a court order, or a lawful direction from a government agency. Where we act on a court or government order, we act within the time that order specifies, and within 36 hours where no time is specified.
If you are not satisfied with how a complaint was handled, you may escalate it under the applicable Indian rules, and nothing in these terms limits that right.
Removal, suspension and appeal
We may remove any post and suspend or remove any member who breaks these terms or the community rules, without notice where the breach is serious.
Removal of a post is not a judgment about you and is not published to anybody else. You are told when a post of yours is removed and you may reply to ask for it to be looked at again.
Repeated breaches lead to a temporary mute and then to removal. Some breaches are permanent on the first occasion: claiming a flat you do not live in, bringing in outsiders, harassment, and anything involving a child.
We keep a record of removals so that decisions can be reviewed and reversed if they were wrong.
What you write stays yours
You keep every right you have in what you post. We claim no ownership of it.
By posting, you give Dakoo permission to display it to the members of your community, to store it, and to send it in the community’s own messaging rooms, for as long as the post lives. That permission ends when the post expires or is deleted.
You confirm that what you post is yours to post, and that showing it to your neighbours breaks nobody else’s rights.
The Dakoo name, mark, wording and design belong to us and may not be used without permission.
What we are and are not responsible for
Dakoo is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability. It runs on modest hardware and it will sometimes be down.
To the fullest extent Indian law allows, Dakoo, its operators and its administrators are not liable for any loss or damage, whether direct, indirect, incidental or consequential, or loss of profit, data, goodwill or opportunity, arising out of your use of Dakoo, out of anything a member posted, out of any deal you made, or out of anything a vendor did or failed to do.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our own negligence, or for our own fraud.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Dakoo, its operators and its administrators against any claim, demand, loss, liability or expense, including reasonable legal costs, arising from what you posted, from your breach of these terms, from your breach of any law, or from any dispute between you and another member or a vendor.
Dakoo is not a party to any arrangement between members and cannot be joined to a dispute about one.
Changes, ending, and the law that applies
We may change these terms. Where a change is significant you are told inside the app, and continuing to use Dakoo after that means you accept it. You are reminded of these terms and the community rules at least once a year.
You may stop using Dakoo at any time, and delete everything about you with /deletemydata.
We may withdraw Dakoo from a community, or close it entirely, and will give notice inside the app where we can.
These terms are governed by the laws of India. The courts at Bengaluru, Karnataka have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to any right you have under consumer law to bring a claim where you live.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
Telegram and all other names and trademarks belong to their owners and are used only to describe what members are talking about. Dakoo is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them.
Money, and our promise about it
Residents are never charged. No fees, no subscriptions, no commission on anything you arrange, and nothing you have to pay in order to see something.
Dakoo will not sell your data, will not put advertising on these boards, and will not rank a neighbour below anybody who paid.
Whatever Dakoo becomes, those three stay. They are the only reason a private noticeboard is worth being on.
